Internship training is a core requirement of Ministry of Education in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for all health specialties. It is also a requirement of Saudi commission for Health specialties/Nursing Board to grant professional registration and licensure to practice within the Kingdom.
Following successful completion of all credit hours required in the undergraduate program, the student must spend 52 weeks of hospital based internship training in a recognized hospital that can offer a proper training areas to meet the objectives of the internship program.
This period of practical managerial and theoretical experience will enable the graduate to acquire more competency and experience to perform as an independent nurse specialist (per Saudi council for health specialties accreditation) and as a first level nursing manager, and will enable her to adjust to the real practical life in different units in the hospital settings. By the successful completion of this internship period the graduate is expected to fulfill the objectives of the program and will be awarded the certificate.

Goals

1. To enable new graduates to integrate knowledge, skills and attitudes to promote competence in nursing practice in different settings.
2. To facilitate the combination of the academic knowledge and the clinical life.

Objectives

After completion of the internship year the intern should be able to:

1. Demonstrate the ability to successfully function in the first level manager role. 
2. To promote knowledge, skills and attitude of the intern in order to being competent in nursing skills within different settings. 
3. Maximizing the intern's adjustment to his future role. 
4. Provide efficient nursing care for critical care patients in different setting using nursing process.
5. Assist the nurse interns to increase their ability in analytical assessment of situations leading to effective decision making regarding problem solving.
6. Assist the nurse intern to further develop and use his written and verbal communication skills in the field of human relations with patients' families and allied health disciplines and community at large.
7. Apply advanced technology to improve quality of care.
8. Participate in planned teaching activities as seminars conferences, round, etc.

Requirements to Join the Internship Program:

1. Completion of all theoretical and clinical courses required in the undergraduate program.
2. Comply with health clearance requirements (lab investigations and vaccinations)
3. Hold a valid Basic Life Support certificate (BLS).
4. Attend orientation at the end of academic year to highlight the rights and duties of interns during the internship year.
5. English Language Proficiency Exam (ELPE): The pass score for this exam is 65%.
6. Interns should comply with all immunization requirements requested by the clinical setting prior to commencing bedside practices.
7. Activate fingerprint for attendance.

Internship Rotation

Criteria for the hospitals that can train the nursing interns:

• The hospital should be a governmental. 
• The hospital must have an education and training unit/department. 
• The hospital must involve all the general care and critical care units to be able for the interns to complete all the clinical rotations. 
• The hospital should be accredited either JCI or CBAHI and promote compliance with regulations, statutes, and accreditation requirements.
• The hospital should be emphasize a safe environment with high standard of safe and effective practice setting. 
• The hospital should be meet the objectives of the training for our students and interns in order to gain practical experience.
• The hospital must conduct training courses in order to improve the staff and encourage professional self-development.
