Stage Two Specialization Stage: The stage lasts for three years and is divided into six semesters where students will focus on their professional and clinical studies for respiratory care. Their clinical training will be done at King Fahd University Hospital or at other accredited hospitals approved by the Department. Internship The internship year begins after the student has successfully completed the required courses. Internship training is conducted at King Fahd University Hospital or at other recognized accredited hospitals. Career Opportunities Intensive care units: adults, pediatric or neonatal Various sections of sleep medicine, studies and labs Laboratories specializing in lung function testing and other tests related to the heart and lungs The role of care for the elderly Home care, especially those with chronic lung diseases Education and Management Year descriptionFirst year During the first year the student will complete their Preparatory year in the Health track. Second year In the second year the students will concentrate on basic science courses such as Anatomy and Physiology of the Human Body, specifically focusing on the respiratory system. Students are introduced to the respiratory care profession and taught the fundamental elements of different therapeutic modalities and procedures, examination skills and techniques. Students will be exposed to the hospital environment and learn what is involved in clinical respiratory assessment and management. Third year During this year students are introduced to mechanical ventilation. This begins with the study of introductory concepts as well as establishing a basic understanding of the most commonly used ventilators and their clinical applications. This will be followed by an emphasis on management strategies of mechanical ventilation according to disease entities as well as respiratory pharmacology. Fourth year In the fourth year students will cover the theoretical concepts of respiratory care along with neonatal and pediatric respiratory Care. Comprehensive information on the structure of the pulmonary rehabilitation program will be part of the fourth year curriculum, as well as examining the role of the respiratory care practitioner. And participating in sleep study. Fifth year (Internship year) The duration of the internship program is one continuous Hijri Year. Internship training is conducted at recognized governmental, private institutions and/or firms. Training sites are determined by respective academic departments, based on a set criteria ensuring the highest level of standards in clinical training, which will be conducted through rotations/sections specified for each specialty as determined and assigned.
