Overview

The English Language and Translation Program of the English Language Department at the College of Sciences and Humanities stared in the year 2018-2019 as a response to the vision of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia 2030 regarding the necessity of aligning university outputs with the local labor market. Its mission is to equip female graduates with research, learning, and thinking skills while gaining knowledge and practice in the fields of English language and translation. This is to enable them to contribute to the development of sustainable society and meet the needs of the local labor market. The student obtains a bachelor's degree in English language and translation after completing four years of study.

Objectives of the Program

Prepare well-qualified students in the fields of English Language and Translation.

Graduation Project

The graduation project is one of the core courses in the English Language and Translation Program. It is a research endeavor undertaken by students at the end of their academic journey to earn their undergraduate degree. This course aims to develop students' research skills by allowing them to select various topics related to language and translation and write a research paper under the supervision of specialized faculty members.

Field Training

Field training is one of the key pillars in establishing a genuine partnership between academic studies and the demands of the job market. It aims to create practical opportunities for students to develop their skills in both written and oral translation by working with real-life texts. Additionally, it enhances their proficiency in using modern translation tools, improves their ability to interact with clients, and equips them to manage translation projects effectively.

This enables students to understand the requirements of the job market and gain valuable professional experience, preparing them to become skilled translators capable of addressing market challenges.

Furthermore, the field training course plays a vital role in providing the college with feedback on the quality of its graduates and the extent to which its outcomes align with market needs. This feedback helps refine and improve academic programs to better achieve these goals.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and Understanding:

K1: Discuss basic concepts and terminology of linguistic theory, English language, translation, and research methods.

K2: Distinguish between translation and different modes of interpretation such as consecutive and simultaneous interpretation.

K3: Identify cultural differences between Arabic and English-speaking nations.

Skills:

S1: Display high competency levels in the four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing as required in both academic setting and working place.

S2: Apply research methods to carry out supervised research based on the basic principles of ethics in academic research.

S3: Carry out subtitling, consecutive and simultaneous translation of a range of speeches, texts and media extracts, in addition to legal and documentary.

S4: Use computational tools and translation software to facilitate research and language study.

Graduates demonstrate critical thinking, analytical skills, and sound decision-making when addressing complex linguistic, cultural, and ethical issues in translation and interpretation, ensuring accuracy and cultural sensitivity.
Graduates are skilled in using digital and computational tools, including translation software and other language technologies, to enhance research, translation, and interpretation, while also applying numerical skills as needed for accuracy and efficiency in their work.

Job Opportunities

Translator/Freelance Translator: Translating a variety of documents, such as legal, medical, technical, tourist, media, and literary texts.
Interpreter: Providing interpretation services for companies, organizations, or individuals.
Translation Project Manager: Supervising translation projects to ensure high quality and timely delivery.
English Language Teacher: Teaching English in schools, institutes, or universities.
Researcher: Conducting research related to language and translation in academic or professional fields.

Admission

1- The program follows the admission conditions and controls specified by the Deanship of Admission and Registration at Imam Abdul Rahman bin Faisal University (Click Here ) as follows:

Conditions related to nationality:
The applicant must be Saudi or non-Saudi with a Saudi mother.
The applicant for the internal scholarship from non-Saudis or displaced tribes must be between (17 - 25) years old to be accepted.
The applicant for the internal scholarship from non-Saudis must have a valid residency and the comparison will be made according to the available seats for each nationality after the approval of the Ministry of Education, with a tuition fee of 9200 riyals, including value-added tax, for each semester throughout the period of his studies at the university, in accordance with what is stated in the acceptance notice for non-Saudis.
The applicant from the displaced tribes must have a valid residency or proof of an extract from the Ministry of Interior and the comparison will be made according to the available seats by the Ministry of Education.

2- Conditions related to the high school certificate:

The applicant must have obtained a Saudi high school diploma or its equivalent within five years, which is for graduates of the years (1441-1442-1443-1444-1445 AH) to apply for all programs except for the health programs.

3- The applicant must have obtained a score on the (General Aptitude and Achievement) tests from The National Center for Assessment (Qyias) and documented in the Government Transactions Program (Yasser), and no more than five years must have passed since the date of the test when submitting the application to join the university.

4- The applicant must not have a current or previous record at Imam Abdulrahman bin Faisal University.

5- He must not be registered or accepted at another Saudi university (dual admission).

6- The non-Saudi applicant or one of the displaced tribes must not be a candidate for admission to any other Saudi university.

Conditions for joining the program:

To successfully pass all foundational first-year courses of the program with a cumulative grade point average of no less than 3 out of 5.

Year description

First year

Aims to academically and linguistically prepare students for their specialization. This is achieved by enhancing their English language skills to meet the requirements of academic studies, in addition to equipping them with essential academic skills.

Second year

Introduces students to the fundamentals of linguistics, translation, and literature in an effort to build a sound base for their specialization.

Third year

Exposes students to different types of written and oral translation alongside with more courses in the field of linguistics.

Fourth year

Provides students with knowledge that meets the needs of the labor market, such as project management, conducting research, and training in companies and institutions to apply what has been acquired over the past years.
