Overview
Responding to community needs in the Eastern Province in particular and in the Kingdom in general to provide professional cadres in field of libraries and information, College of Arts which has been seeking to provide all what may serve and support the Saudi society in all sectors to keep up with spirit of the age of information and technology has opened Department of Libraries and Information since 1431/1432H to qualify scientifically and technically developed woman cadres able to practice the profession and serve the community to meet needs of the different sectors of information labor market in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
By 1444H, title of the department has been changed to be Department of Information Science for many reasons among of which are the developments and changes which have been occurring in field of libraries and information nationally, regionally and internationally which led many academic departments to keep up with such change through introducing their curricula and developing their graduates’ skills and changing their titles and further such developments and changes made on the national level as new needs emerged in labor market and require the academic departments to respond to them through offering outputs matching between preparation and qualification and the available job opportunities; the department has further effectively contributed to preparing and developing national potentials in field of spreading information services in society, raising awareness about information and adopting academic programs which encourage production, transferring, dissemination, exchange and facilitating use of information in order to give chance to graduates to compete in labor market.
