Bachelor of Landscape Architecture

Landscape architecture is a unique specialty that bridges the gap between architecture and urban planning. It is the art and science of creating an outdoor environment that meets the requirements of all prospective users. The discipline of landscape architecture encompasses a wide range of projects, including, but not limited to: the planning and design of parks and recreational areas, residential compounds, plazas, land reclamation for different purposes, as well as cultural and historical conservation and rehabilitation.

Career opportunities

There are numerous professional opportunities available for Landscape Architects, including careers as:  designers, planners, contractors and consultants in the fields of parks and recreational areas, urban and residential development, rehabilitation and preservation of historical and culturally significant areas as well as planning and management of environmental resources.  Graduates may also wish to pursue an academic career and continue their studies in graduate school, work as researchers or become part of the teaching staff at an academic institution.

First Year

Preparatory year is in the Engineering track.

 Second year

In the second year, also known as the common year, all of the second year students in the College of Architecture and Planning will take the same core design classes.  This coursework for the common year will establish a foundation in design, two and three dimensional theories, as well as help the students gain the necessary skills of free-hand and engineering drawing and design techniques and have some experience with planning software before proceeding with their specialization the following years in landscape architecture.      

Third Year

In the third year the curriculum focuses on:  site planning, site design principles, application of the design process and the implementation of the principles and relationships between form and function.  The coursework will include:  three-dimensional techniques and project presentations, while taking into account basic design standards and a comprehensive review of design stages as well as actually applying these skills on a real site.   An emphasis will be placed on having the students apply what they have learned theoretically as well as demonstrate their data collection skills and knowledge of different types of plants.

Fourth Year

The focus of this year is on urban design and environmental/landscape planning, while taking into account both cultural and socio-economic factors. The coursework will concentrate on environmental topics and the conservation of natural resources in urban and rural situations through the use of techniques such as data collection and analysis as well as the development of scenarios depending on the objectives and the type and size of the projects involved.

Fifth Year

In the fifth year the students will be prepared to practice professionally.  They will meticulously apply the knowledge and skills that they have acquired in the areas of data collection, analysis and the design process in order to fulfill the requirements of their graduation project.  This graduation project is a personal project that reflects the students’ interests and incorporates all of the knowledge and skills they have developed over the years at the University, while simultaneously incorporating professional business practices related to project management and cost estimation.
