Overview

The anesthesia technology program provides students – as members of anesthesia team- with the basic knowledge of anesthesia and critical care to develop skills in order to recognize, assess, and assist in managing high-risk patients perioperatively. It also enables the student to develop the skills for basic and advanced life support to gain exposure to different patient problems perioperatively.

Description of the anesthesia technology program

The anesthesia technology program is aimed at training students to prepare them as qualified physician assistants to be able to meticulously assist the concerned specialist in handing the simple as well as advanced clinical and surgical procedures.

The anesthesia technology program prepares students to use the anesthesia tools, materials, and equipment to provide safe and efficient care to the patients before, during, and after the surgical operations, labor and delivery units, outpatient procedure suites, ambulatory surgery centers, and emergency rooms.

The aim of this AT Program is to provide a thorough training to the candidates through formal lectures, seminars, lab. sessions and clinical training which culminate in a one-year internship that finally prepares the student for the rigors of the medical world.

Goals of the anesthesia technology program

The Anesthesia Technology Program goals are:

1. Prepare the student in the psychomotor skills and techniques necessary to perform the role of

the Anesthesia Technologist.

2. Offer guidance and model behavior to the student to enhance the affective domain of learning.

3. Stimulate and improve the critical thinking of the students to improve the quality of anesthesia medical care by graduating highly educated and trained anesthesia technologist.

Objectives

At completion of the Anesthesia Technology Program, the graduate will be able to:

1. Correlate the knowledge of basic sciences as anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology to the roles and responsibilities of an Anesthesia Technologist.

2. Understand the pharmacology of anesthesia and possible interaction with medical status of the patients and with other medications received by patients.

3. Identify equipment, supplies, and materials used in the perioperative setting.

4. Demonstrate responsibility for stocking operating rooms with appropriate materials which requires understanding of which equipment and materials are needed for a given procedure.

5. Use legal, moral, and ethical principles when caring for the patient in the perioperative setting.

6. Demonstrate professionalism throughout the whole duration of the program.

7. Demonstrate various cognitive and communication skills that proactive involvement, critical thinking, ethical behavior and responsibility, and influential roles in the organizations and communities.

8. Demonstrate safe practices among the patients and the perioperative team according to the standards of professional healthcare organizations.
