The IAU Ophthalmology Fellowship Program, established in 1985, reflects a strong commitment to excellence in ophthalmic education and training. This program has successfully produced a continuous stream of highly trained ophthalmologists who serve the Eastern Province and the broader Saudi Arabian community.

Program Overview
The fellowship spans five years and is structured to provide comprehensive training in various subspecialties of ophthalmology. Here’s a breakdown of the program:
- Residents begin with a Basic Sciences course for the first two months.
- Following this, they are gradually introduced to subspecialties, including:
- Cornea and external diseases
- Glaucoma
- Retina
- Uveitis
- Neuro-Ophthalmology
- Oculoplastic surgery
- Pediatric ophthalmology and refraction
- Residents gain experience in preoperative and postoperative care for standard ocular surgical procedures.
Clinical Exposure
- Residents will manage critical and emergency ophthalmic cases during on-call services and rotations in ophthalmology emergencies.
- They will also engage in multidisciplinary care by collaborating with other medical services.
Training Facilities
The program boasts a state-of-the-art wet lab and simulation center dedicated to surgical training, complemented by various practical courses throughout the academic year.
Academic Component, The academic structure of the program includes:
- Weekly protected time for grand rounds
- An academic half-day
- An annual organized review course featuring contributions from department staff and guest speakers from national and international backgrounds
Program Structure
The fellowship includes dedicated clinical courses, and in the final year, candidates are required to submit and present a dissertation.
Graduation Requirements
To graduate from the program, candidates must:
- Complete 130 credit hours over five years of rotations.
- Pass both written and oral examinations, with continuous evaluations at the end of each year to progress.
- Conduct a monitored dissertation and submit it for publication before completing the final year.
- Meet all requirements to be eligible for the final certifying examinations (both oral and written) for the IAU Fellowship in Ophthalmology.
