Dr. Alawayed, A. had his Bachelor degree in 1981 from College of Architecture and Planning, King Faisal University. In 1985, he got a Master of landscape architecture, with honors, from the University of Arizona. In 1991, he acquired his PhD degree from the University. of Newcastle. Currently, He is an Associate professor at the Department of Landscape Architecture, and was the first Saudi national, to chair the Department.
On College level, he served as a Member of College Council five times and still serving. He also headed college admission committee and many other similar activities. At the University level he was the director of the International Leadership Development Program for university students. He also served many times as a member of the university Scientific Council, and still serving. On the professional side he was the Vice President of Alumran Saudi Association in Eastern Province (1st Round).
Alawayed was granted six teaching excellence awards. As he taught many design and theoretical courses, on graduate and undergraduate levels. In addition, he supervised and examined master thesis and projects and co supervised three PhDs.
His research interest is in motorist's services, landscape design, Islamic garden, garden design, Planting design, and landscape architecture history.
