Microbial Antibiotic Resistance

Course Description

The topics of this course include:

• The definition of antibiotics.
• Surveillance of antibiotic resistance.
• The types of antibiotic resistance.
• Ecological consequences of antibiotic resistance by environmental microbes.
• Strategies to assess and minimize the biological risks of antibiotic resistance in the environment.
• Antimicrobial substances and resistance, including the effect of anti-microbes used in aquatic environments.
• And the effects and risks, including the effect of anti-microbes used for non-human purposes on human health.

Course Objectives & Outcomes
At the end of the course the student will be able to:

•  The ecological consequences of antibiotic resistance in the environment.
•  Strategies to assess and minimize biological risks due to resistance in the environment.
•  Understand the results of the interaction between antimicrobial resistance and environment, and the ability to implement risk avoidance strategies
