Course Description
Introduction to organic chemistry. Structure and properties of organic molecules. Structure and stereochemistry of alkanes and chemical reactions. Alkyl halides: nucleophilic substitution and elimination.Structure and synthesis of alkenes, reactions of alkenes.Structure and synthesis of alcohols and the reactions of alcohols. Ethers, epoxides, and thioethers. Aromatic compounds and the reactions of aromatic compounds. Case study: commercial importance of alcohols, alkenes, alkanes, ethers, and epoxides; Ketones and aldehydes;Amines; Carboxylic acids and their derivative and Amino acids.
Practical content:
Tests for liquid compounds: aldehyde, ketones, and alcohols. Tests for solid compounds: acids, esters, and unsaturated compounds. Aromatic tests: nitration and sulphonation. Purification of liquids.
Course Objectives & Outcomes
At the end of this course, the student will be able to:
- Name compounds from the various classes of organic compounds following the IUPAC nomenclature system.
- Solve problems by demonstrating an understanding of fundamental principles and proficiency in organic chemistry.
- Relate the structure of organic compounds to their physical and chemical properties and reactivates.
- Explain various classes of organic reactions according to the appropriate mechanisms.
- Understand the basis of how to synthesise and characterise various classes of organic compounds.
- Deduce the structures of organic compounds from the corresponding infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectra.
