A medical team in KFUH in Al Khobar succeeded in treating two Cardiac Congenital Defect cases for two forty year old males who suffered from a stroke and their tests resulted that it was due to an Atrial Septal Defect. The surgery was executed with the use of an Interventional Catheter. The patients where fully sedated and were discharged the following day after preforming the required tests for them.
Dr. Mohammed Al Mansori Heart Disease and Catheter Consultant and the Head of the medical team said that “Congenital Heart Defects are a result of a genetic disorder which results in damaging the structure and the functions of the heart. 0.8% of newborns are diagnosed with this disease and it is considered the highest organ disease recorded. Nevertheless, a number of patients are not diagnosed until later in their life. But it is good to mention that the surgery is very safe where there is a 95 percent of success.
It is important to note that the treatment process varies according to the patient. There are cases that don’t need treatment as much as they need medical follow-ups from specialists and this is one of the initiatives of the University of Dammam and the administration of the hospital in its quest to provide the latest technologies and qualified cadres to serve the community.
