Course Main Objective
To introduce students to literature of Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (poetry and Prose) and its trends, growth factors of the literature, the most prominent figures, monitor the literary movements and such trends affecting the Saudi literature.
Course Learning Outcomes
- 1. Knowledge and Comprehension
- 1.1 Describe stages of the literary movements in the Saudi literature and most prominent figures, its subjects and artistic trends, manifestations of effect and influence between the Saudi literature and the Arab literatures.
- 2. Skills
- 2.1 Analyze types of literary arts and their themes, the writers’ artistic attitudes and the effect and influence in literary work.
- 2.2 Use communication and information technology and learning resources and effectively communicate orally and in writing upon searching for an issue of the Saudi literature.
- 3. Values
- 3.1 Assume individual, collective and leading responsibility in personal relationships and in such literary works entrusted therewith.
- 3.2 Observe national and moral values and academic integrity in performing the Saudi literature-related assignments.
Course Content
1. An introduction about the course and its requirements.
2. The literary movement which preceded unification of KSA and impact of Sheikh Muhammad Abdel Wahaab's call on the literature, features and most prominent figures of such period's literature.
3. Start of the contemporary literary renaissance in KSA and the most important effects.
4. The factors affecting literature in KSA over its various stages of development.
5. Relation between the Arabic literature in KSA and the Arabic literature in the Arab countries and phenomena of effect and influence.
6. The most important artistic subjects and trends in poetry and the most prominent poets from several generations.
7. Prosaic arts: their origin and development and most prominent writers of: essay, story, novel, biography.
8. Some of literature figures in KSA and models of their works.
