Geography of Tourism and Recreation

Course Main Objective

The main objective of course is to introduce students to the phenomenon of tourism and its concepts, dimensions and relation to geography and sustainable development; explain the historical development of tourism and its social and economic effects; highlight the geographic effects of touristic attraction as well as analyzing the tourism balance regarding evaluation of tourism advantages and disadvantages; clarify the aims, resources and components of tourism in KSA and its importance in the Saudi developmental planning.

Course Learning Outcomes

• 1. Knowledge and Comprehension
• 1.1 Explain the touristic phenomenon and people behavior towards it and the affecting factors and rate of its adequacy and efficiency and further effect on the sustainable development internally and externally.
• 2. Skills
• 2.1 Differentiate the relation between the touristic activities internally and externally and methods of measurement and results and apply to KSA.
• 2.2 Employ IT in preparing and presenting group projects. 
• 3. Values
• 3.1 Employ the quantitative methods, maps, and GISs in analyzing and interpreting spatial information

Course Content:

- Definition of geography of tourism, its domains, development, dimensions and relation of tourism and geography to the sustainable development.
- Some quantitative methods of measurement used to measure the touristic development.
- Types of tourism industry, the natural and human resources affecting tourism industry and how to preserve along with the sustainable development.
- The economic and social consequences of promoting tourism industry and the development plans in KSA.
- Presentation of students' applied research projects and reviewing strengths and weaknesses and assessing researches.
