Course Description
This is a one term course that explores various aspects of art in an effort to engage the student’s mind in developing an understanding of art. Students will develop an understanding of the qualities of great art and to appreciate those aspects, which make art valuable. The course offers an overview of different artistic styles and movements that took place at different times throughout history from ancient to contemporary trends; looking closely at their different characteristics, exploring why artists of various eras produced the art they did, and what factors shaped their creativity. The course will also show the students how to look at a work of art and critically analyze and describe it independently. It attempts also to construct an informed opinion of a work with the understanding of the elements and principles of art, the materials and techniques used and a basic vocabulary for describing any visual art. Students are also exposed through this course to the art scene in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf region; their historical context, contemporary trends and important artists and their artworks
