Overview
The Department of Psychiatry was established in 1975 in order to provide high quality care services to the community, as well as educate and train medical students.
Mission
- To provide leadership in psychiatric education and training, to carry out research, to enhance faculty development and render psychiatric services to the population of the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia.
- To discover the causes of mental illness and to develop new treatments.
Goals
- Education and training of medical students and residents.
- Help the faculty develop in order to ensure academic advancement, professional growth and stability.
- Develop innovative treatments and delivery of comprehensive services on a continuum of care to patients in a high quality, efficient and compassionate manner.
- Performance of clinical research and integration of findings into the care of patients.
- Promotion of the delivery of care in a comprehensive and coordinated manner that meets the needs of patients, families and the community.
Undergraduate Courses
Psychiatry (MDPY 508)
On successful completion of this course the student should be able to:
- Interview patients, obtain and record complete histories, assess mental status and do physical examinations.
- Understand the importance of the interaction between physical, mental and social factors and their effect in causing mental illness.
Behavioral Sciences (MDPY 335)
On successful completion of this course the student should be able to:
- Understand the relationship between human behavior, health and sickness.
- Know the developmental stages of the human mind and their relation to the needs of a person.
- Understand the roles of the family, community, religion and the level of education in a patient's life.
