Overview
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology was established in 1979 and is involved in the teaching and training of undergraduate and postgraduate medical students as well as providing routine and tertiary care for patients. The department is equipped with a full-fledged delivery room suite that includes first stage rooms, labor rooms and an operating theatre for obstetric cases. The hospital receives normal and high-risk cases through different channels. There are 12 obstetrics and gynecology clinics per week. Consultants, senior registrars and residents are involved in the running of these clinics. The department runs an active Obstetrics and Gynecology emergency room, providing around-the-clock service.
Mission
Obstetricians and gynecologists are in demand all over the world, but more so in developing countries where the birthrate, maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality rates are high. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has a shortage of qualified obstetricians and gynecologists and hence there is an urgent need for accomplished doctors who can provide excellent, modern obstetrical and gynecological care to the community.
Goals
- To enable medical students to acquire the basic knowledge of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive medicine in order to have a secure foundation in the subject on which they can subsequently build their further specialization.
- To adopt evidence based medicine in teaching and training.
- To keep the students up-to-date and provide them with the opportunity to choose the best options for their patient management, including new paradigms of professional development.
- To provide quality teaching and training at the postgraduate level in order to achieve a consistent high standard of training and thus improve quality of medical care.
Undergraduate Course
Obstetrics/Gynecology (MDOG 603)
This 9-week course enables the medical students to acquire the adequate knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for this discipline. Instructional methods include: lectures, tutorials and bedside teaching. Teamwork is valued, since it facilitates learning in different clinical environments within the department such as the delivery room, in-patient units and clinics.
