Course Description
Introduction: Definition and classification of natural products –Function of natural product in plants – Economic importance of natural products.
Terpenoids: Occurrence –Isoprene rule – Classification (monoterpenoids, sesquiterpenoids, diterpenoids, sesterterpenoids, triterpenoids, tetraterpenoids) - Biolodical and economic significance. Essential oils (composition, physical and chemical properties, extraction methods) – Biosynthesis and mevalonic acid pathway - Carotenoids – Steroids.
Phenolic compounds: Occurrence – Simple phenols – Phenyl propanoids –Phenolic acids - Coumarins –Stilbenes – Flavonoids - Anthocyanins –Tocopherols – Lignin - Biosynthesis and shikimic acid pathway– Extraction methods –Antioxidant and other biological activities.
Alkaloids: Definition – sources and biological activities Extraction of alkaloids – Classification of alkaloids according to their chemical structures – Biosynthesis (alkaloids derived from: ornithine and lysine, tryptophan, phenyl alanine and tyrosine).
Miscellaneous natural products: Polycyclic aromatic natural products – Quinones – Aflatoxins.
