Course Description
This course covers details of the PharmD Program, i.e. the objectives, scope and requirements of the PharmD Program such as: an introduction to various courses, compulsory as well as elective, modes of teaching, learning and training (e.g. problem based learning, the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE), institutional pharmacy training and experiential learning, college disciplinary rules and regulations for the examinations. The pharmacy profession will be examined looking at the following topics: the definition of “pharmacy”, different areas of the pharmacy profession, the history of pharmacy, an introduction to ancient drugs, ancient Egyptian, Greek and Roman medicine, Chinese and Indian medicine, Arab medicine in Spain and modern European medicine and the history and global progress in pharmaceutical education.
Coursework will also include: an exposure to different dosage forms, methods of drug preparation, introduction to pharmacopoeias, formularies, regulatory control and drug management, a review of roles of clinical pharmacists in community and health care settings, an introduction to clinical pharmacy and finally an overview of the medical and pharmacy terminology related to systems in the body that are needed for a complete understanding of other courses.
