Introduction to course: why are surfaces interesting, begin surface thermodynamics and surface structure - Surface Thermodynamics - Surface Structure; Two-dimensional Lattices - Intro to electron spectroscopy: Analyzers, electron- Surface/Film Composition: XPS - Electron mfp, diffraction methods: LEED; RHEED; Scanning probe - Microscopy: Principles of SEM,TEM, LEEM- Adsorption, desorption, diffusion, etc.- Ion Scattering Methods- Intro to Electronic Properties - Band Structure: Bulk, Film, Surface- Measuring electronic structure: UPS, ARUPS, IPS- Photovoltaics- Nucleation and growth of nanostructures and films- Surface Magnetism -Vibrational Spectroscopy; Oxide Surfaces- Biomaterial Surfaces and Interfaces- Energy transfer, sticking, atom scattering- Organic semiconductors/photovoltaics- Carbon Nanotubes and graphene.
